Getting Started with OneSearch

A guide to using Velma K. Waters Library's OneSearch discovery tool to find research resources.

Keyword Synonyms & Related Words

Different authors writing on the same topic may use different terminology. It is a good idea to brainstorm synonyms and related words to your topic early in the search process, and add to this list whenever you encounter new terms as you search.

For example, a synonym for "light pollution" might be "artificial light". If you are studying a specific kind of bird, like the Canada Goose, you could treat its scientific name (Branta canadensis) as a synonym.

Research is a Process

Most of the time when you are working on a research project, you are not looking for one single, perfect resource. Instead, you will be looking at everything available on a topic and selecting whichever resources best fit your project.

Because of this, you don't have to try to create the "perfect" list of search terms. It is likely that you will search several times over the course of your project, adjusting keyword and filters as needed. Research is a process done in cycles and stages, so don't be discouraged if you don't find what you need on the first try.

Brainstorming Synonyms

Reference books like dictionaries and encyclopedias, especially ones tailored to a specific subject or topic, can also be great places to search for synonyms and related terms.
