Finding Articles

Note: Newspapers & Magazines

This section of the guide is about finding articles published in scholarly or academic journals. To find articles published in a newspaper or a magazine, you will follow the same steps outlined below, but you can instead select "Newspaper Articles" or "Magazine Articles" from the filter list under Resource Type. Do not select "Peer-reviewed Journals" as a filter unless you are trying to find scholarly/academic articles.

Steps for Finding Scholarly/Academic Articles in OneSearch

Step One: If you already know the title of a specific article you want to find, you can search for it directly.

Otherwise, choose one or two keywords related to the topic to begin your search.

For example:

  • "fire safety" AND architecture

TIP: Putting quotation marks around a phrase will make it so OneSearch only shows you results including those words in that exact order. (For more information, see the Search Strategies page of this guide - link opens in a new window.)

TIP: If you know you only want articles published in peer-reviewed journals, select the check box below the search bar.

You can also select Advanced Search below the main search bar to give yourself more fields and filters to work with. At the start of your search, you can set parameters for resource type, language, and publication date, as well as select whether you want OneSearch to search only the library collection, a specific type of resource, or everything. If you need to use more than two search terms, you can add additional lines. (See Advanced Search for more information - link opens in a new window.)

Step Two: To open an article that is available online, click on its linked title in the results list. Navigate to the View Online section of the item's page and click the title of any database linked in that section. Some articles may only be available in one database, but others may have several options for viewing.

You will be asked to sign in with your myLEO or SSO credentials to access most databases.
