Getting Started with OneSearch

A guide to using Velma K. Waters Library's OneSearch discovery tool to find research resources.

Saving Your Searches

If you are logged into your library account, you can save a search to return to it later - including retaining all active filters. To save your current search, select the push pin "Save Query" icon at the top of the results page.

The Save Query icon is found at the top of every results list for logged-in users.

To review your past saved searches, open your account menu and select "My Favorites." Click any linked search to search it again.

Interested in following current research on a topic? Click the bell icon beside your saved searches to get notified by email any time an item matching your search criteria is added to one of the library's databases that is searchable in OneSearch.

Clicking any saved search link will re-open that search in OneSearch. The icon to recieve notifications for a search can be found to the right.

You can also save specific articles, books, and other items to your account. To save multiple items at once, select the checkboxes to the left of any items you wish to save, then select "Add This Item" at the top of the results list. To save just one item, select the "Add This Item" icon to the top right of any individual item's entry. Both ways to save are indicated by a push-pin icon.

Select multiple checkboxes to the left of items in the result list to multi-save. Save individually with the icon to the right of each item.

Want more control over how you organize your saved items? A citation manager like RefWorks may be what you need. Check out the library's guide on using RefWorks to set up your account and start saving and organizing your research resources (link opens in a new window).

Steps for Personalizing Your OneSearch Results

If you do most of your research within one or a few specific fields, you can personalize OneSearch to show you results from only those disciplines.

Step One: When you are logged into your library account, look for the "Personalize" toggle at the top of any results page. Once personalized searching mode has been turned on, the toggle and text will turn a reddish-purple color.

The toggle for turning personalized searching on/off is at the top of the search results list for logged-in users, next to Save Query.

Step Two: After you toggle OneSearch personalization, look for the new "Personalized results" filters in the list of filters on the left side of the screen (mobile users can open the filter list from the funnel icon at the top of the results page). The text for these filters will be the same reddish-purple color as the personalization toggle.

If you want to change the disciplines that appear for you in personalized mode, select "Edit Disciplines." You can also direct OneSearch to prioritize the most current research by selecting the "Prefer newer material" check box from the list at this time.

Step Three: Select up to five disciplines for OneSearch to prioritize in your search results, then select "Save Changes" at the bottom right corner of the menu to apply the selected disciplines to your current search.

The list of disciplines available for personalization is broken down further into sub-disciplines.

These selections can be changed at any time. You can also turn off Personalized Results at any time by toggling the switch to "off."
