Getting Started with OneSearch

A guide to using Velma K. Waters Library's OneSearch discovery tool to find research resources.

Finding Books

You can use OneSearch to find specific books by author or title, or you can search using a few keywords related to your topic and see what materials are available through the library.

Want to see if Waters Library has a copy of your textbook? Check out the Course Reserves section later on this page.

Steps for Finding Books & eBooks in OneSearch

Step One: If you already know the title of a specific book you want to find, you can search for it directly. Otherwise, choose one or two keywords related to the topic to begin your search. Type your search terms into the OneSearch bar on the library's homepage and select "Search."

TIP: Putting quotation marks around a phrase will make it so OneSearch only shows you results including those words in that exact order. This is particularly useful if you are searching for a specific book by title. (For more information, see the Search Strategies page of this guide - link opens in a new window.)

From the results page, the drop-down menu where you can select Books/Ebooks is to the right of the search bar at the top of the page.

Step Two: Under "Availability" in the list of filters, you can select "Available online" to browse eBooks and "Available in the library" to see what we have physically on our shelves in the library building.

Filters for Book Search can be found on the left side of the screen on the computer, and can be opened from the funnel icon on mobile.

Physical Books: Items physically located in Waters Library will be identified in the OneSearch results list with their location and call number. If you need help locating an item, please ask a staff member for assistance. Students, faculty, and staff may check out physical items by bringing them to the library front desk along with their LionCard.

eBooks: To open an eBook, click on its linked title in the results list. Navigate to the View Online section of the book's page and click the title of any database linked in that section. Some books may only be available in one database, but others may have several options.

You will be asked to sign in with your myLEO or SSO credentials to access most databases.

Links to open an eBook are found on that book's item record page under View Online.

Course Reserves

Waters Library has a limited selection of course textbooks. To see if your book is included in our course reserves collection, select the Reserves tab in OneSearch on the Library Homepage and search using your course name/number, instructor name, or the title or author of the book. If the book is available, you can request it at the library information desk. Reserve items have a 2-hour checkout time and may not be taken out of the library building.

Reserve items for an upcoming semester appear in the catalog 1-2 weeks before classes start.

The Reserves tab is the second tab on the OneSearch interface on the library homepage.
