Defining Counseling and Psychotherapy

Counseling and Psychotherapy research often looks to evaluate the effectiveness of different therapy treatments as well as patients’ experiences of therapy. To do this, researchers often develop scales in questionnaires to measure patient outcomes, which need to be tested to ensure they are valid and reliable. Therapy research can also look at naturally occurring data—the thoughts, feelings and talk of patients in therapy. Ways of making sense of this complex data include thematic analysis, grounded theory and phenomenological analysis.
