Citing with APA

A Waters Library guide to the APA citation style.

Welcome to Citing with APA

The purpose of this guide is to introduce East Texas A&M University (ETAMU) students to the APA citation style. This is not a comprehensive guide and does not list all rules for writing and citing with APA, but it does provide links to resources and tools designed to help students create accurate citations.

Learning Outcomes

By the time you finish reading this guide, you will be able to: (all links open in new windows).

  • Locate resources on citing using APA.
  • Access citation management tools to organize your references and expedite the citation process.
  • Review example citations for standard types of sources.
  • Spot common errors in citations.

APA Style Guidelines

The American Psychological Association released the 7th edition of the APA Publication Manual in 2019. However, some instructors may ask their students to cite according to the APA 6th edition, or have additional citation requirements specific to their course. Be sure that you know which edition you should be referencing, and if your instructor is requesting any changes to the standard APA format.

For the most current and thorough rules on the guide, visit the APA style website (all links on this page will open in a new window).

Note: While the APA website provides examples of references, in-text citations, and paper formatting, the full style manual for APA is not available online without purchase. The focus of the website is also primarily on APA 7th edition.

See the following resources provided by APA for more information:

Librarian meeting assignments
