Guide to researching with PICOT

Ovid Emcare with Ovid Nursing Journals

Ovid is a wonderful resource, with customizable search options and filters. When searching Ovid, use the Multi-field Search option. This will allow you to break your PICO questions into parts.

Search Tips

  • When picking terms use nouns more than verbs.
  • Keep terms concise to increase relevant results.

Creating Your Search

  1. Find your terms: You can use MeSh terms. To find these:
    1. Select the Multi-field Search option and change the dropdown from All Fields to MeSH Heading Word, then enter your keywords.
  2. Determine your filters: With Ovid's customizable search filters, you will need to select your search filters. To do this:
    1. Expand the Limits dropdown. Located near the search button.
    2. Click Edit Limits
    3. Select the check boxes for the filters you want and click Customize Limits.
    • For our example we would want the "Human age group"  filter to be available.
  3. Using the Multi-field option to build your search query.
    • Search each part of your PICO question separately first.
