Research with PICOT

Guide to researching with PICOT

Cochrane

Cochrane has a set up very different than what you would in CINAHL or PubMed, but you can still use MeSH terms to search through various articles.

Search Tips

  • When combining search lines, make sure to put the Boolean Operator in ALL CAPS. (AND, NOT, OR
  • Register an account (use your TAMUC email) to save & share searches.

Steps for Conducting Your Search

As with all databases, you should start in the Advanced Search.

  1. The best method to search would be to try MeSH terms (similar to PubMed)
  2. Select the Search Manager tab.
  3. In line 1 select the MeSH drop down.
    • You can try the same MeSH searches as you did in PubMed. MeSH is the same regardless of which database you are using
  4. Type the MeSH term and click Look up
    • Looking up the MeSH term you can explode all (see all possible terms associated) or narrow down as needed
  5. In the MeSH Trees column select: Explode all trees, Single MeSH term or Explode selected trees
  6. Once you are set on the MeSH term, click Add/Edit search line.
  7. Click the add icon to add a line for each search term.

To combine terms:

  1. In another line, combine all the searches you want to add, like so:
    • #1 AND #2
  2. Set publish date limits prior to viewing the results via the Limits button to the right of the active search line. To view results, click the result number to the right of the search line you want to view.
