Scientific Research Basics

Saving Your Research

While you are conducting all your research, you may want to put a lot of sources together even if you do not plan to use all of them in your final paper. This will save you time when you are actually writing the paper, as you will not need to go back to review more sources. With that in mind, you will need to keep good track of the articles you may decide to use/examine further. There are a few tools you can use to do this, each explained in more detail below.

RefWorks

RefWorks is a citation management program provided by the library to all students. It will enable you to save your sources (and the full text pdfs if you choose) and organize them into different folders for your research papers.

Note: When first creating a RefWorks account, go to the "Create Account" option on the bottom of the page. You will need to use your leomail address to verify you are a ETAMU student.

Refworks has a large number of tutorials on the ProQuest Refworks YouTube channel. An important one to know, creating a bibliography list, is included as an example here. ProQuest also provides a RefWorks Guide. You can also contact a librarian to get one on one instruction on using RefWorks.

EndNote Web

EndNote Web is another citation manager that you can use, without the requirement of having a school affiliation. EndNote Web is best for any research you want to continue to keep track of after graduating. Note: EndNote Web is not EndNote, and will not have all the same capabilities or tools as the full EndNote. If you want a citation manager with many tools and more complete services, use RefWorks.

Library Account

You can also use your library account to mange your sources when you are conducting your research through OneSearch. This is especially useful when you are beginning your research and want to determine what literature has been created for what you want to research before digging too deep.

Follow these steps to see how to save sources to your library account, and how to view them after they've been saved. For additional help Contact a Librarian.

  1. Be sure to sign in first, usually when you begin conducting a search you will see a banner with a reminder to log in. Otherwise, you can log in through the "sign in" on the top right. Your sign in is the same information as your MyLeo.Image of top of OneSearch demonstrating where to log in - upper right corner of top menu
  2. Once you have logged in, you can save the search query (if you do not want to review everything at once but want to remember your search terms), or you can save specific items (articles, books) that you want to review. This is accomplished through "pinning" the results. Pinning the query means you save the entire list, whereas pinning the one item means you save that item only.Image demonstrating pins for saving query in top of search, or pinning item with pin icon found on right of the item
  3. Once you have pinned your items, or when you log back in another day, you can view them all in your account or by checking the pin icon in the top menu on the OneSearch screen. This is called "My Favorites".image showing pin of my favorites in top menu of OneSearch
  4. In "My Favorites" you can see your saved items and your saved searches. As needed when organizing, you can put labels onto specific items (such as labeling by a class, query, or paper). It will also show any search history from when you were logged in.
