Finding Legal Cases in Westlaw Next Video Tutorial


 

Westlaw Next Reference, Secondary Sources, and Tools

The 11th edition (2019) of Black's Law Dictionary is located electronically in the Westlaw Next.  To access Black's Law Dictionary in Westlaw Next follow these steps: 

  1. Go to the library homepage
  2. In OneSearch box click on "Databases"
  3. One the A-Z Database list click on the letter "W"
  4. Click on Westlaw Next
  5. If you are off campus you will need to enter your Proxy Login information which is your CWID and MyLeo Password
  6. Once in  Westlaw Next click on Secondary Sources 
  7. Black's Law Dictionary  will be located on the right hand side of the page under the column "Related Content"

 

Westlaw Next has multiple Texas legal journals including Texas Bar Journal, Texas Law Review, and Houston Law Review.  The journals can be accessed by following these steps:

  1. Go to the library homepage
  2. In OneSearch box click on "Databases"
  3. One the A-Z Database list click on the letter "W"
  4. Click on Westlaw Next
  5. If you are off campus you will need to enter your Proxy Login information which is your CWID and MyLeo Password
  6. Once in  Westlaw Next click on Secondary Sources 
  7. Under "By State" click on Texas, then look under Law Reviews and Journals

You can also search Texas Secondary Sources by utilizing the search bar at the top when you are in the section on Texas Secondary Sources. 

Westlaw Next has a content tab for Practice Areas which allows you to browse or search content by a specific type of legal topic such as Labor & Employment, Environmental Law, Family Law, and Intellectual Property. 

  1. Go to the library homepage
  2. In OneSearch box click on "Databases"
  3. One the A-Z Database list click on the letter "W"
  4. Click on Westlaw Next
  5. If you are off campus you will need to enter your Proxy Login information which is your CWID and MyLeo Password
  6. Once in  Westlaw Next click on Practice Area

Use KeyCite, the citation research service, to help determine whether a case is good law and to retrieve documents that cite the case. KeyCite covers every case in West’s National Reporter System and more than 1 million unpublished cases.
