Library Instruction Services

Overview of library instruction and instructional request

Library Instruction

Library instruction provides students and faculty with opportunities to learn essential research skills and navigate academic resources effectively. We have designed 4 instruction options based on the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) frameworks that offer structured guidance aligned with key information literacy standards. These options may be held as a class, individually, or in small groups; and aim to empower participants with the tools and knowledge needed to excel as lifelong learners.

Typically, each session last about 30 - 45 minutes, but we are able to tailor the sessions to meet the needs of the request.

Additionally - There are Add-ons available that can be included in the options above. Please note that we will need extra time dedicated to cover requested add-ons.

We are happy to visit classrooms multiple times through out the semester. So, if you would like us to cover multiple topics or do follow-ups, please let us know.

Online Library Orientation

Our Online Library Orientation option offers a comprehensive introduction to our online services, ensuring participants can make the most of their library experience from wherever they are. This session will guide participants through accessing e-books, scholarly databases and online research tools essential for their studies. A great option for new to Velma K. Waters Library students.

Key points:

  • Navigating the library's webpages
  • Contacting a reference librarian and booking consultations
  • Types of resources and how to access them (e.g, books, articles, multimedia)

This session will explore ethical guidelines governing AI applications, potential risks such as misinformation, and strategies to mitigate some of these issues.

Key points

  • AI policies (University & Instructors)
  • Citing AI generated material
  • Misinformation risks

Possible add-ons

  • Ethics & Considerations - offers ethical implications of using AI in academic settings, covering considerations such as bias, privacy, and responsible deployment.
  • Using AI as Tools - offers practical knowledge on how to use AI responsibly in academic coursework.

Custom Instruction

Our custom instruction option provides personalized guidance tailored to specific academic needs and research goals. This service offers focused training on essential skills such as effective search strategies, evaluating sources, and proper citation practices, all aligned with your unique coursework or projects.

To begin designing a custom instruction please chose up to 3 key skills or frameworks from the ACRL Frameworks when filling out the request form.

Not sure which of the frameworks would best suit your needs? That is fine. Collaborate with your RI librarian to design a session that addresses your individual requirements and enhances overall information literacy skills of your class.
