Theses & Dissertations

A Comprehensive Guide to Academic Success

Commonly Used Style Guides

The style guide you use depends on your field of study, subject matter, and most importantly, what your department or advisor recommends as most appropriate for your document.  In many cases a department may require a certain style guide be used, so it is important to check with the department head for what style guide is recommended.

The Graduate School will do a general review of adherence to your chosen style guide. To ensure your document adheres to your chosen style guide, work closely with your advisor. Ultimately, however, it is your responsibility to make sure your document correctly follows the appropriate style.

iThenticate

iThenticate is a licensed program that is available only to faculty and some administrators and staff. The software compares the uploaded files against >7052 billion web pages and 74 million content items from leading academic publications. When the iThenticate comparison process is complete, a “similarity score” is generated. The purpose of this software program is to screen written material for originality and to check for instances of plagiarism in submitted documents. Your advisor will review the results of your document's iThenticate report with you to discuss ways to reduce the amount of similarity found in your document.  The Graduate School allows for up to 12% similarity in reports submitted to TDS. If all efforts to reduce the score to 12% or less are unsuccessful, the student’s advisor must submit to TDS via email an explanation for the high score (e.g., terminology, formulas, etc.). The Dean of the Graduate School will review the report and either provide recommendations to improve the score or accept the paper as submitted.

iThenticate

(for faculty use only)

The university uses this software program to screen for originality in submitted theses and dissertations.  The Graduate School sets a cap of 12% of similarity on submitted proposals and final documents.  This is a licensed program and only faculty (and some staff) can run this report for you.

List of Editors

The Graduate School maintains a list of editors recommended by students.  This list is maintained as a courtesy to students and can be requested by calling or emailing TDS (903-886-5968; TDS@tamuc.edu).
